"The Eco-Modernism LifeStyle"

Eco-Modernism: sustainable fashion in design + decor.

[lifestyle photo above from Sci Fashion. Discarded Ethernet Cables Become Recycled Fashion in Colombia. Environmentalists worry about piles of non-recyclable e-waste, or discarded high-tech equipment. And somehow that's led to an explosion of Ethernet cable fashion, as you can see in this recent fashion show in Medellin, Colombia.]

Recycle. Reuse. Redesign.

For the love of modern furniture + wares, combined with a feel-good-green sensibility, comes the Eco-Modernism Lifestyle. For the love of "Earth Day," and as we become true nesters and build our sanctuary of good living, it’s a good idea to give back + take less.

Thank goodness we can turn to the creative, risk-taking, and innovative designers in decor fashion to bring us cutting edge designs made with sustainable + organic materials. Not only do they seek out alternative sources such as, FSC certified woods and recycled fabrics, they find creative ways to upcycle* things like Ethernet cables, automotive seat-belts and 100% recycled plastic waste. One of my favorite designers of Eco-Modern is Peter Danko who takes upcycling* to the next level and creates clean lined modern frames for the true green urban dweller. Check out Peter's cool modern wares, including my favorites made with post-industrial automotive seat-belts, which are available in various industrial colors.

What Makes Peter Danko Green?
"The furniture we design is largely Ply-bent, a relatively new medium whose aesthetics have been explored by a mere handful of designers. Ply-bent furniture is the perfect sustainable material because veneer yields 8-10 times more usable wood from a log than solid lumber. Our furniture is made using non-toxic water based adhesives, and we use recycled materials for seat suspension and padding." ~ Peter Danko

"Design hounds who dig Eco-chic will want to do a victory dance. Filling a much-needed niche, Viesso's enterprising half-brothers Ryan Schultz and Travis Nagel have made their Internet-based modern furniture company a fabulous high-five between sexy designs and sustainable manufacturing." ~ James Servin. A few other urban cool designers of the Eco-Modernism lifestyle are half-brothers Ryan Schultz and Travis Nagel who founded Viesso ~ a designer driven custom house of modern wares which allows you to make the conscious chose to "choose" green materials to create sustainable upholstery pieces. Eco-Modern choices include: locally sourced SFI Alder frames, FSC Certified Maple, Natural Latex, Recycled or Natural Fibers, Water based Glue + Stains. To learn more about the amazing founders and designers, and their Road To Green, visit the boys at www.viesso.com.

What makes Viesso Green?
"We didn't start the company fully green. Our father is an energy specialist, so we grew up living a pretty green lifestyle. Both our parents were using solar panels over 25 years ago. They are happy that the revolution is finally taking place. Quickly after we began this company, we realized that we could offer green options. As we work with different companies, we see that they're all moving in that direction, so we almost don't even have a choice now." ~ Ryan Schultz

[Green notes: What is Upcycle* ~ A term coined by William McDonaugh and Michael Braungart. The process of converting an industrial nutrient (material) into something of similar or greater value, in its second life. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organization that brings people together to find solutions which promote responsible stewardship of the world's forests.]

  1. I am reporting daily on my Blog, from a distance unfortunately, on the International Furniture Fair in Milan, held this week and designers are now really conscious about the Earth (and the economy). Great Post, very informative.
